The Same Picture, a Different Format
An image format is a way of packing the same grid of pixels into a file. A conversion reads the picture out of one format and writes it into another, which is why the picture looks the same while the file, its size and its abilities change. The honest points sit around what each format can hold. JPG is lossy and small but keeps no transparency, so a clear background is filled with a colour. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency but makes larger files. WebP and AVIF are the modern web formats that are smaller than JPG at the same look and keep transparency too. One rule holds throughout: turning a compressed JPG into a lossless PNG stops any further loss but cannot add back the detail the earlier compression removed, and repeating lossy conversions stacks the loss each time. The standards below define the main formats.
