The Same Picture, a Different Format
An image format is a way of packing the same grid of pixels into a file. A conversion decodes the image from one format and encodes it into another, which is why the image looks the same while the file, its size and its capabilities differ. The honest points sit around what a format can hold. JPG is lossy and small but keeps no transparency, so a clear background is filled with a colour. One rule holds throughout: turning a compressed JPG into a lossless PNG stops any further loss but cannot add back the detail the earlier compression removed, and repeating lossy conversions stacks the loss every time.
