Redact PDF Online

The free online tool to redact PDF online removes text and images from the file for good, not a black box laid on top. Redaction runs in the browser and the document is never uploaded. The removed content cannot be copied or recovered.

Why Redact PDF Online

Three PDFs That Need Redaction

A black box is not enough. The free online tool removes the text itself, so a shared document gives nothing away.

A Black Box That Still Leaks

A rectangle drawn over a name in a PDF editor leaves the name in the file, ready to copy out or reveal by moving the shape. True redaction deletes the words, so nothing sits underneath.

The content is removed, not painted over.

A Contract Ready to Share

A contract or report often carries names, numbers and addresses that should not travel with it. Redacting those before sending keeps a copy useful while the sensitive parts are gone for good.

Names and numbers come out cleanly and for good.

A File Too Private to Upload

A document being redacted holds the very detail worth guarding, the last file to send to an outside server. Redaction on the device keeps that content where it already sits.

Redaction runs online in the browser, not on a server.
How it works

Redact PDF Online in Three Steps

1

Load the PDF to Redact

Drop a document onto the panel above or pick one from the device. The file opens in the browser, and no copy is sent out.

2

Draw Boxes Over What to Remove

Drag a box over any text or image to mark it, or search a name or number to find every place it appears. Each marked area is queued for removal, on one page or across every page at once.

3

Apply and Save the Redacted PDF

Applying is the step that deletes the marked content from the file for good, so every box can be reviewed and undone up to that point. Download the redacted copy with the metadata stripped, and the unredacted original stays untouched.

Text gone from the file Not a box laid on top
Search to locate Find every name or number
Metadata scrubbed Author and hidden layers too

Redact a Whole Folder at Once

A single file redacts in a moment right here. When a run of documents needs the same detail gone, or a pattern such as a card or a national ID has to be caught across many pages, the desktop app auto-detects and redacts every file in one pass, straight from disk.

What the free tool does

What the Redact PDF Tool Does

To redact PDF online is to take sensitive content out of the file for good, not to hide it. The tool does that on the device.

Remove the Underlying Content

The text, image or vector under each box is deleted from the page content stream and a solid bar is drawn in its place. Nothing is left to copy, search or extract from the saved file.

Strip the Hidden Metadata

A PDF carries more than the page, an author name, the original filename, a revision history and hidden layers. The redacted output has those scrubbed, so nothing leaks off the visible page.

Search to Locate a Detail

Typing a name, an SSN, a credit card or a phone number finds every place it appears across the document. Each hit can be marked at once, so a detail scattered over many pages is caught in a single step.

Black Out or White Out

The bar burned in over each removal can be black or white to suit the page. Either way the mark is part of the document on save and cannot be lifted to show what was there.

To redact a PDF, to black out a detail and to remove sensitive information all name the same step. The redacted file is written new here, and the unredacted original is left as it stands.

Redaction and Its Limits

Redaction only protects when the data is truly gone. These are the points that decide it.

The caseResultWhat happens and why
True redactiondata removedThe content under the mark is deleted from the file structure, so it cannot be copied, searched or extracted.
Black box on topnot redactionA shape laid over text is a separate layer. The words stay in the file and show up by copy, search or moving the shape.
MetadatascrubbedAuthor, filename, revision history and hidden layers are stripped, so detail off the page does not leak.
IrreversiblepermanentOnce applied and saved the content is gone, which is why an unredacted backup is worth keeping.
Search and redactfind allA name, number or email is located across the whole document and marked in one step.
Scanned pagesOCR firstOn a scan the text is pixels, so running OCR before redacting catches it and removes it as text.
Verifysearch the outputSearching the saved file for a removed word should return nothing when the redaction held.
ComplianceGDPR and HIPAARules on personal and health data call for removal rather than obscuring. This is not legal advice.
Where it runson the deviceThe redaction is applied in the browser, so the document is never uploaded.

Removes the Text, Not a Box Over It

A PDF keeps its text and its visual marks in separate layers, so a black rectangle drawn on top adds a new layer without touching the words beneath. Those words still travel in the file, ready to be copied, searched or shown by lifting the shape, which is the redaction mistake behind more than one public leak. True redaction deletes the marked content from the file structure and scrubs the metadata, so a saved copy holds nothing to recover. It is permanent, so an unredacted original is worth keeping aside. The frameworks below set why removal, not disguise, is what the rules ask for.

Honest comparison

In the Browser vs a Hosted Redaction Tool

Both remove content from a PDF. The trade matters here, since a document to redact is a sensitive one by definition.

Point of comparison This tool Redacted in the browser On the device Hosted redaction Uploaded and redacted on a server
Where the document goes Never leaves the device Uploaded to a server
Price Free with no doc cap Free tier often capped
Auto-detect patterns Manual and search Card and ID libraries
A whole folder at once One file in the browser Batch on their hardware
Redaction audit log No log kept Logged for defensibility

The hosted side takes three of these rows, because auto-detecting patterns, running a folder at once and keeping a defensible log all belong on a server with a compliance team behind it. For one sensitive file the opening two rows decide it. The file stays on the machine, and nothing caps how many pages are cleaned for free.

Why no upload

The Document Never Leaves the Device

The redaction happens on the page within the browser itself, cutting the marked content out of the file and painting the bar where it stood. Whatever leaves the page and the document around it both remain on the machine that loaded them.

Uploading a file to redact it hands the very content being guarded to a server first. A page waiting for redaction is a contract, a medical record, a tax form or a bank statement, exactly the kind of thing that should be cleaned before it goes anywhere at all.

1. In the browser developer tools, switch to Network
2. Empty it and keep the recorder running
3. Apply a redaction on the panel above

Other Ways to Redact a PDF

Each of these can take content out of a document. They differ in cost, in whether they truly remove data and in where the file goes.

Adobe Acrobat Pro

The Redact tool marks and then removes text and images for good.
A search option finds a word or a pattern to mark across the file.
Real redaction sits behind the paid Pro subscription.

Command Line, mutool

A tool such as mutool or pdf-lib can delete content from the page stream.
A sanitize pass clears metadata and leftover objects.
It installs software and runs from text commands rather than a browser.

A Black Box in an Editor

Drawing a rectangle over text looks redacted on screen.
The words underneath stay in the file and copy straight out.
This is not redaction and has caused real data leaks.

Hosted Redaction Sites

A hosted site can remove content and offer pattern detection.
A paid tier adds batch runs and an audit log.
The sensitive document is uploaded to a server to be read.

Acrobat and the command line work where the file already sits, whereas a hosted site wants it uploaded before anything happens. The free online tool above stays on the device like those two, and it takes the data out for good instead of masking it.

Before redacting

Three Things to Check Before Redacting

A moment of care keeps the redaction clean and complete.

Keep an Unredacted Backup

Redaction cannot be undone once saved. Keeping the original file aside means the removed detail is still on hand for records or a later need, while the shared copy stays clean.

Mind the Metadata

Detail off the page can still identify a document, an author name, the original filename or a revision history. The redacted output has that stripped, and a quick check confirms nothing extra remains.

Verify by Searching

After saving, searching the redacted file for a removed word is the fastest proof it worked. A result of nothing means the content is truly gone rather than hidden under a bar.

The desktop edition

When a Batch Needs Redaction

One file at a time in memory is the browser tool, right for the document in hand. Where a pile of records shares a pattern to strip, or a whole folder ships under a compliance rule, the desktop edition takes over, working from disk and clearing every file while logging each redaction as it goes.

In a browser tabone document redacted at a time
On the desktopa whole folder redacted in one pass
Whole Folders

Point it at a directory and the same detail or pattern is removed from every PDF in one run, each saved beside its source.

Auto-Detect Patterns

A Social Security number, a credit card, a phone number or a national ID can be caught by pattern across a whole set, without marking each one by hand.

Audit Log

Each redaction is recorded, giving a defensible trail for a legal or regulatory review that a browser session does not keep.

Common questions

Redact PDF Questions

Yes. The tool deletes the marked content from the file structure and draws the bar in its place, rather than laying a shape on top. After saving, the removed text cannot be copied, searched or pulled out with an extraction tool, because it is no longer in the file.
A PDF keeps text and visual marks in separate layers. A rectangle drawn over a word is a new layer that leaves the word in the file underneath, where it shows up by copy, search or removing the shape. That mistake is behind several public data leaks.
No. Once applied and saved the content is permanently removed, so there is nothing to bring back. Keeping the unredacted original aside is the way to hold on to the detail for records, while the shared copy stays clean.
Yes. The redacted output has the document metadata stripped, including the author name, the original filename, the revision history and hidden layers. Removing what is on the page while leaving that behind would still give a document away.
Yes. Typing a name, a number or an email finds each place it appears across the document. Every hit can be marked in one step. A detail scattered over many pages comes out without hunting for it by eye.
Yes. A box removes whatever sits under it, a line of text, a photo, a stamp or a signature, all deleted from the file the same way. Anything drawn on the page can be marked and taken out, not only typed words.
On a scan the text is part of the image, so a box removes the pixels in that area. To catch and remove text as text, run OCR on the scan first, then redact the searchable result. That way a copy of the words is not left in a hidden text layer.
No. Redaction runs in the browser, so the document and everything removed from it stay on the device. A hosted tool uploads the file to a server instead. Here the Network panel in the developer tools stays empty while a PDF is redacted.
Any content on the page can be marked, and it is usually personal detail. Common targets are names, Social Security numbers, credit card and bank account numbers, phone numbers, email addresses and dates of birth. That is the personally identifiable information, the PII, a shared file should not carry.
Redacting a document that belongs to the reader is fine and often advised, for example taking an SSN off a form before sharing it. Altering a contract, a court filing or an official record received from someone else can be a different matter. A subpoenaed document should not be touched without legal advice. This tool is for the removal step, not legal guidance.
Both burn a solid bar over the removed area, one in black and one in white, to suit the page. In each case the content beneath is deleted, not covered, so the colour of the bar is a matter of look rather than security.
True redaction removes personal or health data from the file, which is what those rules ask for rather than obscuring it. Whether a full process meets a rule depends on the case, so this is a tool for the removal step and not legal advice.
No. A new redacted copy is written for download while the source stays exactly as it came in. Since redaction cannot be undone, keeping that untouched original is the safe way to work.
Yes, from any mobile browser with nothing to install. Marking an area with a finger works on a touchscreen. A larger screen makes precise boxes easier to place on a dense page.
Every up-to-date browser runs it, whether on Windows, macOS, Linux, a phone or a tablet. No download and no extension come into it.
No. The bars drawn to remove content are the only additions. Nothing else is stamped on, no watermark and no page counter and no paywall, so the output holds only what was deliberately marked out.
Serving a plain page is cheap when the free online redaction is done by the browser, with no file taken in to store. The desktop edition pays the bills, earning its keep on folder-scale runs and pattern detection while the browser tools stay free.

Redaction goes wrong in one particular way, and it is worth naming. People draw a black box over a name in an editor, see it covered and assume it is gone. It is not. The word still sits in the file under the shape, and anyone can copy it out or lift the box to read it, which is how confidential names have ended up in the news. Real redaction deletes the content from the file itself and clears the metadata around it, so a saved copy holds nothing to recover. This tool does that in the browser and sends nothing to a server, since a document being redacted is the last one that should travel anywhere unclean.
