Batch-Process Your VCF Files

Reading one VCF at a time works well here and covers most people. Have a folder of contact files to convert to CSV, or need more speed? The desktop app runs those batch jobs without a browser tab in the way.

When You Want to Read Without Importing

These are the situations that bring people to OnlinePCApps. Each one takes about ten seconds to solve.

No Contacts App You Trust

A locked-down work laptop or a machine where you do not want the contacts added to your address book.

Opens in the browser you already have. Nothing to install.

A Contact File Someone Sent You

A .vcf lands in your inbox and you want the name, number and email before it touches your contacts.

Every contact and field, nothing imported.

The Contacts Are Confidential

A client list, a lead export, a private address book. Uploading it to a website to read it is not a risk you want.

Nothing is transmitted. Check the network tab.

The online app

VCF File Viewer, on Any Device

The online VCF file viewer exists so you can read a contact file on whatever screen is in front of you, right now.

On Your Phone

Open a .vcf straight from your downloads folder without adding it to any contacts app.

On a Tablet

iPad and Android tablets open a .vcf only by importing it. This one only shows the contacts, no import.

On a Locked-Down Laptop

Work machines where IT blocks installs still have a browser. That is all this needs.

On Someone Else's PC

Nothing is installed and nothing is left behind. Close the tab and it is gone.

OnlinePCApps VCF Viewer is a free browser-based app that opens and reads a VCF contact file without uploading it. It needs no account and works on any device with a browser. If you have hundreds of files, or a contact export too large for a browser tab to hold in memory, that is where the desktop tool takes over.

The difference

OnlinePCApps vs Upload Services

Most online VCF viewers send your file to a server, queue it, then let you download the result. Here is what that costs you.

Capability This page OnlinePCApps Runs in your browser Typical upload-based service Sends your file to a server
Your file is sent to a server Never Yes, every time
Paywalled size tier None Commonly 20 MB
Account required No Usually for larger files
Time to first result Under a second Upload plus queue, often minutes
Cost per file $0 Often $8 to $12 a month above the free tier
Result expires Never, it is local Typically 24 to 48 hours
Your file leaves the device Never No
Data deletion promise needed Not applicable You have to trust it

Comparison describes the common upload-and-queue model used by server-based converters, not any single named product.

Privacy

We Cannot Leak What We Never Receive

Every upload-based service has to make you a promise: we will delete your file afterwards. That promise is only as good as their infrastructure and their word.

This page makes no such promise, because it does not need one. OnlinePCApps runs no upload endpoint and no server-side component for this app. Open your developer tools, open a file and watch the network tab stay empty.

What a VCF File Actually Contains

A VCF file holds one or more contacts as vCards, written in plain text with a small set of properties. Every part below is one of those properties, which is why a viewer can lay each contact out as a card.

PartHeaderWhat it holds
CardBEGIN:VCARDThe wrapper that marks the start of one contact
VersionVERSIONThe vCard version the card follows, usually 3.0 or 4.0
Full nameFNThe display name shown in a contact list
NameNThe structured name: family, given, middle and prefix
PhoneTELOne or more phone numbers, each with a type
EmailEMAILOne or more email addresses, each with a type
AddressADRA postal address, broken into its parts
CompanyORGThe organization and department
TitleTITLEThe job title or role
PhotoPHOTOA contact picture, embedded or linked
NoteNOTEFree text notes about the contact

Standards this viewer implements

A VCF file is plain text that follows the vCard standard. It is not tied to any one contacts app, so any parser reads it. OnlinePCApps parses it in the browser and shows every contact. The specifications below define the format.

Because vCard is an open standard, a .vcf written by Apple Contacts, Google Contacts or Outlook all follow the same rules, so one viewer reads them all.

Alternatives

Other Ways to Open a VCF File

The online VCF viewer is not the only route. Here is what else works on each platform and where each option falls short.

On Windows

Outlook opens a .vcf, but a double click imports the contact into your address book.
The Windows Contacts app handles it too, and it also adds the contact rather than only showing it.
Thunderbird reads a .vcf into its address book, so it imports as well.
Notepad shows the raw text, which is hard to read across many contacts.
All of the contacts apps add the contact. This viewer only reads it.

On macOS

Apple Contacts opens a .vcf, but it imports the contact into your address book.
TextEdit shows the raw text without importing anything.
Contacts and other apps read a .vcf too, but they add the contact the same way.
Every contacts app changes your address book. This viewer never does.

On Linux

GNOME Contacts and Evolution open a .vcf, but both import the contact.
khard reads a .vcf from the terminal without touching your address book.
Any text editor shows the raw properties for those who know the format.
Only this viewer and a text editor read a .vcf without importing it.

When Opening It Adds the Contact

Double-clicking a .vcf opens a contacts app, which adds the entry to your address book. Reading it here shows the same details and changes nothing.

Double-clicking a .vcf in a contacts app imports it into your address book. This viewer only reads it, so nothing is added.

When a File Holds Many Contacts

A single .vcf often bundles a whole address book. The viewer splits it into separate cards so each contact is easy to read.

A single .vcf can hold a whole address book of contacts. The viewer lists every card rather than merging them into your contacts.

Where the Browser Runs Out

A browser tab has real limits. The desktop tool was built for the work that sits on the other side of them.

Why OnlinePCApps Ships a Desktop Tool at All

A browser has to load the entire file into device memory before it can show you anything. That is fine for a normal file. It is not fine for a 2 GB archive. A phone runs out far sooner than a laptop does.

The desktop tool streams from disk instead. File size stops being a question you have to think about.

Online viewerbounded by device RAM
Desktop toolbounded by disk space
Truly offline

No connection at any point. It runs on air-gapped machines, on a plane and inside networks that block outside traffic entirely.

No size ceiling

Multi-gigabyte contact exports open without the tab dying. The file is read in pieces from disk, never held whole in memory.

Whole folders at once

Point it at a folder of VCF files and browse them in one place instead of opening one at a time, then the next, then the next.

Built for large batches

Hundreds of VCF files at once without the memory ceiling a browser tab runs into.

Search across a folder

Find a contact by name, number or email across a folder across every file in an archive rather than only the one you have open.

Batch export to PDF

Merge or convert an entire folder of contact files to CSV in one run.

What users say

Used Where Uploading Is Not Allowed

The people who need this most are the ones who cannot send a file to a stranger's server.

Locked-down machines

Half our floor runs a hardened image with no contacts app they trust. When someone gets a .vcf they used to import it and clutter their address book. Now I send them this link.

Gordon Pryce IT administrator · mid-size firm
Old archives

We inherited a folder of VCF exports from a system decommissioned years ago. The viewer listed every contact on a locked-down machine, which was the whole point of the audit.

Confidential material

We handle discovery material that legally cannot touch a third-party server. This is the only online VCF reader our compliance team cleared, because there is nothing to clear.

FAQs

VCF File Viewer Questions, Answered

A VCF is a vCard file, a plain-text format for contacts. It holds names, phone numbers, emails, addresses and more. Apple Contacts, Google Contacts and Outlook all use it to share contact cards.
Yes, and that is the point of this viewer. Contacts apps import a .vcf into your address book when you open it. This viewer only lists the contacts, so nothing is added.
No. The file is read with the browser FileReader API and parsed in JavaScript on your own device. There is no upload endpoint because there is no server side to this app.
There is no plan tier to outgrow, but there is a practical ceiling. The browser holds the whole file in device memory, so a laptop handles a large address book a phone cannot. Very large files are better in the desktop tool.
No. There is no account, no email capture and no trial. The app is a static page and works the moment it loads.
Parsing is local, so a typical file opens in well under a second. There is no queue, no upload time and no processing wait.
Yes. A single .vcf can hold a whole address book, and the viewer splits it into separate cards so you can scroll or search through every contact.
Yes. Each card shows the name, phone numbers, email addresses, postal address, company and title, with the type label on each field.
Yes. When a card has a PHOTO property, embedded or linked, the picture shows on the card alongside the details.
Yes. Names and addresses in Hindi, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and accented European scripts render correctly, because vCard files are UTF-8.
Yes. The viewer reads both the older 3.0 cards most apps write and the newer 4.0 format, so a file from any source opens the same way.
Yes. Any field on a card can be copied on its own, so you can pull one number or address out without importing the whole contact.
The browser app opens one file at a time. For a folder of contact files, or to merge or convert many to CSV at once, the desktop tool handles the batch.
Yes. It runs in mobile Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Brave, on Android and iOS. You can open a .vcf without it landing in your phone contacts.
Yes. The file never leaves your device, so a client list, a lead export or a private address book stays private and is never merged into a shared account.
Use the online viewer to read a contact file on any device. Switch to the desktop app to merge or convert files, to export to CSV or to open an address book too large for a browser tab.
Yes. Once installed it never needs a connection. It runs on air-gapped machines, on a plane and inside networks that block outside traffic. The online viewer needs the page to load once, then reads files offline too.
This is a viewer, so it reads rather than imports. When you do want a contact added, your own contacts app opens the same file and imports it in one step.
They are the same thing. VCF is the file extension, and vCard is the standard the file follows. A .vcf file is one or more vCards saved to disk.
A VCF keeps each field labelled and supports photos and multiple phones or emails per person. A CSV is a flat table. This site has a viewer for each, and the desktop tool converts between them.
The online app runs entirely in your browser, so serving it costs us about as much as serving a blog post. There is no upload, no processing and no storage on our side. The desktop tool does the heavy batch work and pays for the team.
Yes. The file stays on your device, the viewer only reads the contacts and nothing is added to any address book. It also does not fetch any link inside the file.
Phones and contacts apps export to it, email signatures attach one and CRM and address-book tools produce it. Almost any app that stores contacts can share a .vcf.

We started in 2013 building desktop file and migration software, which meant reading file formats byte by byte long before any of it ran in a browser. This viewer is that same work rewritten in JavaScript: it parses the vCard grammar, reads every property and lists each contact without sending a single byte anywhere.

How we test this app

Real VCF files from Apple Contacts, Google Contacts, Outlook and phones, not synthetic samples Nested multiple phones, embedded photos and folded lines, so every contact still resolves Non-English names and addresses in UTF-8 Embedded photos, quoted-printable fields and multi-card files handled with soft line breaks Malformed and truncated files, to check we fail with a message rather than a blank screen Re-verified against each major Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari release
Found a contact we parse wrong? Tell us and we will fix it.
